Undeniably, Dune, created by Frank Herbert in 1965, is a science fiction novel that inspired many. While it’s been with us for more than half a century, it is in its renaissance thanks to relatively new movie adaptation and a couple of video games. They go as far back as to 1992 with the intriguing adventure and strategy title simply named Dune Awakening – long awaited survival MMO that lets players explore the desert planet. Some of the fans who decided to invest in Advanced (Early) Access can enjoy it already, however for many it’s a bit of an overstatement, since it appears that the title doesn’t deliver when it comes to server infrastructure. It is not uncommon to see “server locked” error messages and not working party invites. It does not bode well for the start of an otherwise amazing journey. Let’s see in greater detail what is going on.

Server issues in Dune Awakening

One might want to say that nothing allowed us to foresee the issues that Dune Awakening is facing right now. However, back in May we were able to see how unfinished and unpolished the game was. Regardless, love for Frank Herbert’s work and the universe he created have won over and made thousands of players to jump into the fray immediately (via SteamDB). This enthusiasm was quickly cooled down by “server locked” errors (probably due to reaching full capacity) and being unable to friends’ instances due to not working party invites.

If we venture to Steam’s Community Hub, we would see multiple posts submitted by fans complaining about server issues. It goes without saying that multiplayer is a big part of the production and having it not working correctly is unacceptable. We can only imagine that it is due to the unforeseen number of concurrent players. It would appear that the developers have underestimated the love that fans of Dune have for this universe. Nevertheless, the creators have not remained deaf for the infuriated and disappointed voices of gamers. They have shared a couple of tips on what to do if servers are not available to choose from. Additionally, they have acknowledged issues with the server disruption and claimed that they are working on it. One of the patches addressing the problem will be released in a few minutes. If you would like to stay up to date with the most recent news regarding the situation, visit the latest mentioned thread, or go to Dune Awakening’s official Discord server, or check the dev’s X or Bluesky s.

Sadly, this is nothing new when it comes to a production developed by Funcom studio. We have already seen similar situation with their previous title – Conan Exiles. While the game itself was not bad by any means, it still lacked polish and technical prowess to let it truly shine.

It is said that one can make a good first impression only once, and that ship has sailed already for Dune Awakening. Hopefully, in the following patches and server infrastructure upgrades down the line the game will become a position worthy of Frank Herbert’s vision. Till then, we have to stay patient and let the developers do their job. Have fun!
