Another rally game, in which we race on the routes of special sections scattered all over the globe. A dozen or so different rally machines, including WRC class cars, have been put at the player's disposal.
The sport of rally racing is often neglected stateside, but Pro Rally brings authentic rally cars and tracks to the Nintendo GameCube along with a host of realistic weather effects.
On Track for All Conditions
In Pro Rally, you race a highly tuned road car down 48 treacherous tracks filled with kinks and twists. Expect to have your port stamped in England, Sweden, Italy, Argentina and more. You must master driving on many different surfaces, including tarmac, gravel, mud, snow and ice.
You can get behind the wheel of 20 officially licensed cars from such world famous manufacturers as Audi, Toyota, Subaru, Mitsubishi and Peugeot. Each car is detailed with trademark logos. Highlights include the historic Audi Quattro A2 and the seemingly unstoppable Peugeot 306. One gripe: these high-octane rides do not show damage when you take a spill.
Tuned for Action
Before a race you can choose parts to suit the track conditions, including Suspension, Tires and Gearbox. During a race it is important to stay on track, as a reset will eat up precious time. Collisions are less problematic because limited repairs can be done between stages.
After completing a sequence of training events in Professional School you can compete in a championship that, although not officially licensed, mimics the World Rally Championship. After racing through special stages, you are ranked against other top drivers according to your total time.
Other modes include Time Trial, in which you race against a ghost car, and Arcade. The Trophy mode takes place on circular tracks on four different circuits. There's multiplayer for two players using a split screen or up to eight players alternating.
Graphics
The middle-of-the-road graphics in Pro Rally include good car models with independently animated suspension. Weather effects look realistic, but there are no particle effects apparent when splashing through puddles. A nice cockpit view shows a realistic dashboard and accurate animation of the driver steering and shifting.
Rallying for Fans
Pro Rally fills the need for a rally racing game on the Nintendo GameCube. Typical of this genre, graphics play second fiddle to the demands of simulating a complex sport. The many cars and tracks should satisfy fans. The racing surfaces are done quite well. Only the lack of visible damage weakens the sense of realism.
