Ronin Blade (known as Soul of the Samurai in the USA) is an action adventure game released in 1999 on PS1, offering two playable characters with separate storylines. The production was created and published by Konami, the Japanese company responsible for such iconic series as Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania or Silent Hill.
The action of Ronin Blade takes place in feudal Japan. The players have two main characters at their disposal. Kotaro Hiba is a stray samurai who travels around the country in search of adventure. Lin is an orphan, trained in the art of ninjutsu, who gained combat experience by performing spy missions for the shogunate. Although the paths of the two characters are strongly connected, each of them has a separate story to learn.
Ronin Blade is a typical representative of the action adventure game genre, focusing on exploration of 3D levels and participating in numerous battles. Character movements and controls draw on the Resident Evil series, although the more confrontational nature of the game led to the introduction of a more advanced combat system.
There is only one button to attack, but depending on how long the player is holding it or which direction button is pressed at the same time, the character performs a different attack. The arsenal of the two main characters includes swords, shurikens and bombs. Both the protagonists and the tools they use to fight can be developed/upgraded for points earned by eliminating opponents.
